Johnny Gomez' Desert Storm Midge
Steve's Story about the Midge
This Midge pattern was developed by Johnny Gomez, a fishing guide on the San Juan River in New Mexico. It was introduced to me by Ross Purnell on the VFS Web Site and subsequently, there was an article on this midge and others by Johnny in a recent issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine. Johnny's original pattern called for Black dubbing in the thorax area. I've substituted Black Ice Dubbing to give it some extra flash. The interesting technique that Johnny applies to this midge is the laying down of an even floss body and then ribbed with the same material after it has been twisted. A piece of Pearl Krystal flash is wrapped between the ribbed floss which provides a very flashy body segmentation. Best of all, it's easy to tie and you can tie up a bunch of them. The Florescent Orange is traditional to the San Juan River in mimicing the small San Juan Worm. The tying pattern of this fly is a traditional midge pupa. I would imagine that Black or Dark Olive would be excellent colors for stillwater applications.

Pattern

Hook: Tiemco 2487 #20-24.
Thread: Fluorescent orange floss.
Abdomen: Fluorescent orange floss with Pearl Krystal Flash wrapped over.
Thorax: Black Ice Dubbing.

Notes: Lay the floss flat from the front to the back of the hook, binding down the Krystal flash as you wrap. Twist the floss into a tight rope, and then wrap back to the eye of the hook in spiral wraps. Wrap the Krystal Flash forward, tie it off, and then dub small thorax. (The body profile should look like a midge pupa.) Whip-finish.
